Zika is the new boogeyman that is coming for you. The way the locals talk about it, you’d think it is going to: eat your children, rape your wife, kill your dog and burn your churches. Calm down. Chances are this is just more knee-jerk hysteria from a gullible population with a culture that discourages critical thinkers.
On September 10th, the 7th Zika case was reported. Is it the start of a new pandemic? Considering all the other “impending pandemics” I have heard of in the past 7 years, i’m not too worried. I have been through: H1N1, H5N5, Rabies, Dengue and many others that were insignificant enough that I’d never committed them to memory. Each and every time the locals thought it was the end of the world. And each and every time the new, scary disease managed to kill fewer people than inconsiderate drivers did. According to Wikipedia, 39 people died from H1N1 in the ENTIRE WORLD. When compared to the 1,819 people who died from vehicle accidents in 2014 just in Taiwan, one has to wonder why everyone is so scared of new diseases but sees no need for turn signal or to put their phones away while driving.
So don’t worry about Zika. You are far more likely to die from about 1,000 different things in Taiwan before you ever get infected with Zika or any other biological boogeyman that the Taiwanese blow out of proportion.
